Aimco Cares Opportunity Scholarship

The AIMCO Cares Opportunity Scholarship has been established within the NLHA Education Fund’s Scholarship Program by one of the nation’s largest providers of affordable rental housing Apartment Investment and Management Company (Aimco). The AIMCO Cares Opportunity Scholarship is intended to provide educational grants to residents of affordable housing to support their goals of attending college.

Goal: To establish and implement a scholarship program to benefit a graduating senior or undergraduate student to facilitate and provide opportunities to pursue a higher education.

Process: The Board of Directors shall appoint a committee to review applications for this scholarship and make recommendations based upon the Scholarship Criteria. Funds will be paid directly to the institution of higher learning and may be used for tuition, books, and activities directly relating to the student’s education.

Bill Gandert Memorial Scholarship Fund

Bill Gandert was instrumental in the creation of numerous public housing authorities in the State of Ohio and served as general counsel for many of them as well as Executive Director of the Mansfield, Crawford, Huron, Marion and Seneca County Metropolitan Housing Authorities. A vocal advocate for the poor, Bill helped found a number of poverty programs in his state and was an active NLHA member, serving as the organization’s 7th President.

Goal: To establish a scholarship program to benefit a graduating senior or a returning student to allow them opportunity to pursue a further education in a specific trade or vocation outside of traditional undergraduate schools.

Process: The NLHA Education Fund Board of Directors shall appoint a committee to review applications for this scholarship and make recommendations based upon the Scholarship Criteria. Funds will be paid directly to accredited trade school and may be used for tuition, books, equipment/tools and expenses directly relating to the student’s education. Scholarships winners will be notified by phone and/or by mail.

Mary Lou Manzie Memorial Scholarship

Mary Lou Manzie was a woman who dedicated her career to providing safe, decent and affordable housing. She was always willing to look at new and effortless ways to achieve that goal. A member of the National Leased Housing Association from 1975 until her death in 2006, she served as an Officer and Director of NLHA for many years. We dedicate this scholarship in her memory.

Goal:To establish a scholarship program to benefit a non-traditional student in an encouraging and non-discriminatory way allowing them opportunity to pursue a higher education or other training.

Process: The NLHA Education Fund Board of Directors shall appoint a committee to review applications for this scholarship and make recommendations based upon the Scholarship Criteria. Funds will be paid directly to the school and may be used to pay for, tuition books or other expenses necessary to allow the student to attend classes/training.

Neil Churchill Memorial Scholarship

A true Section 8 advocate, Neil Churchill served at HUD working with the state agencies that were financing the program. In the private sector he was a developer, bond underwriter and FHA specialist. Before his death in 2003 he served as a Vice President with GMAC and was a past President of NLHA. Neil's entire career was devoted to affordable housing.

Goal: To establish a scholarship program for graduate level study.

Process: The Board of Directors shall appoint a committee to review applications for this scholarship and make recommendations based upon the Scholarship Criteria. Funds will be paid directly to the institution of higher learning and may be used for tuition, books, room, board and activities directly relating to the student's education.
